Please introduce yourself shortly to our readers (current work, position within the IDO).
I am a trainer and choreographer of the dance school Kazina. I also am self-employed as a choreographer but mostly I work for Kazina. I am not teaching the beginner’s classes anymore but the advanced – for competitions or professional dancing.
In the IDO I take part in a lot of meetings e.g. of the Tap Board and the Show Dance Committee. I also judged in the Tap Dance World Championships as a VIP judge and then I am the choreographer of teams competing in the World Championships.

How many World Championships did you win?
I never counted. I got titles as dancer and as choreographer but for me it does not count so much. Of course it is a great feeling to become World Champion but finally what counts for me is to be remembered – that people remember my work.

How did you get into dancing?
I started in primary school in the school dancing groups. After the first dancing I started as a break dancer but I am not doing very much street dance anymore. In street dance competitions the organizers decides which music is used but I like to create my choreographies to music I decide to use. So I mainly do choreographies in Show Dance, Tap Dance and Modern/Jazz.

Which were your biggest points of success as a dancer?
I was never crazy about competitions. I liked to learn different styles, danced as a break dancer, went to ballet school and tried to keep my mind open and learn. I won the World Championships some times.

Which is the secret of your work/choreography?
In the last years I changed my style. It is connected with getting a family and having my daughters. I developed my own style. It is mostly Modern and Jazz.
What also changed is that I am risking more. When I have an idea and I think it is good I realize it. I try not to watch too much what others do. I try to keep my mind open and not get it limited.
And it is very important for me to know my dancers well. I only work with regular teams. I do a lot of classes with them so I know every movement and every way they dance.

What do you want to give IDO-dancers on their way?
The most important thing is to not forget that dance is an art and not only a sport. In competitions dancing is treated like a sport but dancing is not all about getting titles and marks but about the impression.

Mitja Popovski (41) is Slovenian and one of the most successful choreographers of the Kazina, the oldest dance school in Slovenia (and also former Yugoslavia). He studied economics but his life is dancing. He grew up as a dancer in Kazina and is a certified trainer with a diploma from the Faculty of Sports of the Slovenian Dance Federation. Very important in his career as a dancer and choreographer was that he spend 10-15 summers in New York City, going to open classes, meeting people and learning from them. Mitja has won many World Championships with his dancing and his choreographies. He always competed in groups and did only solos in his professional career.
